The World Bank Group (WBG) is currently seeking applications from the eligible applicants for the post of Health Specialist in Bamako, Mali.

WBG has set two ambitious goals to push extreme poverty to no more 3 percent by 2030, and to promote shared prosperity and greater equity in the developing world.

Key Jobs Responsibilities

The Health Specialist will perform the following functions-

  • Support tasks teams in the preparation, design and implementation of analytical and advisory services and lending operations in Mali and other countries as needed.
  • Participate and contribute to the health policy dialogue with the Malian Government and other development partners.
  • Contribute, together with the Country Management Unit and with the Government and development partners, to the strategic discussions (SCD and CPF), regarding development challenges in HNP and other related sectors/global practices, and the WBG overall engagement.
  • Cultivate and maintain effective relationships with country officials, partner agencies and multi-partner fora.
  • Cultivate and maintain effective relationships with country officials, partner agencies and multi-partner fora.
  • Promote and seek opportunities for the health team in the Mali country office to work in collaboration with other GPs on innovative initiatives of mutual interest and of synergetic value to the country program to support multi-sectoral approaches for improving health and nutrition outcomes, and strengthen country systems.
  • Provide selective support to other country or regional programs in the region based on need and strengths of the successful candidate.
  • Initiate and lead preparation of just-in-time policy briefs and reports to meet demand from within the WBG, or from Government.
  • Initiate, join and lead high-impact publications, including just-in-time briefs and reports to meet client demand, and new ideas to stimulate new ways of meeting long-standing challenges in HNP.
  • Contribute to analytical and operational services in other parts of the HNP Family.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must have-

  • An advanced degree in Public Health, Economics, Business Administration or related Social Sciences, and at least 5 years of relevant experience. In addition, a medical degree would be a strong asset.
  • Strong track record in leading the design and implementation of health systems strengthening and/or public health projects.
  • Knowledge and experience in designing and implementing Results-based financing mechanisms will be an asset.
  • Knowledge of the preparation and supervision of IDA/IBRD-funded projects, and/or Trust Funds, or similar experience from other multilateral development institutions is desirable.
  • Experience in Sub-Saharan Africa, and in particular, fragile or low income contexts, is desirable.
  • Proven analytical skills, and excellent French and English-language written and oral communications skills.
  • Experience in international development, and experience working in a multilateral institution will be an asset.
  • Strong diplomatic and client-engagement skills, and proven success working both as a team member and as a team leader.
