MWC 2017: Kenya’s WeFarm Wins 4YFN Awards

WeFarm, a Kenya based peer-to-peer farming information platform, has won a 4YFN Award at the 2017 Mobile World Congress, which held in Barcelona from 27 February – March 2, 2017.

Now in its fourth year, the 4YFN Awards is the world’s largest startup competition on mobile technologies and business models that’ll benefit the lives of digital entrepreneurs and will highlight the most promising projects.

This year’s edition saw 325 entries from startups from over 110 cities in 45 countries worldwide. 24 startups were eventually selected for the finals.

The finalists pitch to investors, media, potential clients and the best qualified jury of experts for a chance to emerge winner. WeFarm was named winner of the Disrupted by Mobile category.

Launched in 2015, WeFarm enables the world’s 500 million small-scale farmers to share and access vital information on farming via SMS and online.

Users can share and access vital pieces of agricultural information via SMS, on anything from how to improve their farm to how to battle a disease, without spending any money or having any access to the Internet.

In just 18 months, WeFarm has seen unprecedented growth in offline markets with over 120,000 users and more than 16 million interactions already – all between users without Internet.

The startup, which recently reached 100,000 farmers across Kenya, Uganda and Peru, raised US$1.6 million in a seed funding round from LocalGlobe late last year.

It plans on using the fresh funds to reach more farmers, precisely 100 million in five years.
