Kamal Bhattacharya, former Vice President of IBM Research Africa, is stepping down as interim CEO of Kenya’s renown incubator and accelerator iHub to head up Safaricom’s yet-to-be-launched Innovation Hub.
Appointed in August last year, Bhattacharya’s role was to oversee iHub’s transformation – iHub 2.0; a restructuring of the hub to serve the community better.
The transformation started with the Connect, Build, Invent mantra and saw the implementation of a new strategy, operating and business model, and organizational structure.
Also, three products line, namely Entrepreneurship Journey, Innovation Journey and Investment Instruments were launched to reflect the transformation. iHub 2.0 culminated in the relocation to a new space to enable iHub expand its services, and reach and serve a bigger community.
Following the official launch of the new space, Bhattacharya announced he is stepping down from the position, saying the whole experience was second to none.
“My role as CEO of the iHub is coming to an end. It has been a personal and professional experience for me second to none. We are now actively searching for an outstanding Managing Director to run the iHub,” he said.
He added, “I am truly humbled by the opportunity I was given to serve the iHub. My sincere thanks to the entire iHub team for engaging with me and building bridges for me.”
Although Bhattacharya will become Chairman of the board of the iHub, his next port of call will be at Safaricom Innovation Hub, according to this report. Once the space launches, Bhattacharya will become the new CEO.
